First steps for making music.

To start off a career making music, you will need a few tools:

  • A Computer
  • A Decent Microphone

Making an urban song nowadays only requires a human voice and a computer. To be more specific, your computer should have installed a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), a software that can create and manipulate sounds.

This website has free interactive tutorials that teach you everything about music. To begin learning, please finish these tutorials:

  • Learn the simple laws of music theory (This will take you 1.5 hours).
  • Learn how to use a DAW (This will take 20 mins).

After completing these tutorials, you are now ready to start making music! Your next step is to install a DAW on your computer. You may choose any of the popular DAWs used nowadays, but the easiest one to start with is Ableton Live.

If you want to record lyrics into your song, you will need a descent mic. All artists record their voices using Condenser Microphones. Any condenser microphone is better than the microphone on a phone or headset.

In case you do decide to buy a condenser mic, don’t forget to also buy a windscreen to reduce your breathing sounds on your voice.

This is a picture of my setup for reference. I use Ableton 11 on a MacBook Air and an AT2020 Condenser Mic.

I’ve used this laptop and mic setup for 7 years now. Helping me to produce many songs alongside my friends.

Here is an album made by SMITTY and I last year as an example.

With your DAW and Mic on hand, you can now start making any song you want. Spend your next 3-4 weeks just playing around with the software and recording any tunes that come into your mind.

Remember, the best tutorials you can find are on Ableton’s official website, they offer everything ranging from music production workflow tutorials to in depth explanatory tutorials for digital music components like compressors, equalizers, reverb. You will slowly see yourself making better songs as you progress.

If you want to get your songs out there in the internet, you will have to do this via a music publisher. The cheapest publisher we have found so far is one called amuse. This label worked well for us, as you can see from our songs on YouTube.

This is the conclusion of the tutorial. Assuming you already own a computer, the total cost of all the music equipment software and publisher fees will cost you around 500 US dollars.

Good luck with your career in music. Quick reminder, no artist gets their first song right on the first try. Just keep making music until you come up with something good.
